The Charleston is a fast and energetic dance that was very popular in the 1920s and '30s. Due to its energetic style and fast leg movements, The Charleston became one of the signature symbols of The Roaring Twenties.

Charleston is divided into a number of sub-styles originating from different periods. Some are partnered dances and others are solo. It is a central component of Lindy Hop and Authentic Jazz. After learning the basic steps of , a student can move to the fast music in no time! The many variations of the basic steps allow the more advanced dancers to explore creativity and musicality.

Charleston courses are one of the two main study tracks at Swing it (formerly Holy Lindy Land) (the other is Lindy Hop). Every swing dance combines elements from both Charleston and Lindy Hop to form Swing.
