You Know You're an Israhopper When

Every scene has its own unique characteristics, and the Israeli swing community is no exception. We definitely have our fill of shared experiences and inside jokes. Here's a checklist to see how much of a hardcore Israhopper you are:

 

1. You sometimes wish you were around in the 1930’s… and on second thought you don’t

2. You’ve been to electro swing parties at Milk/Bootleg/Dizengoff 99 and showed those hipsters how it’s done

3. Your non-dancer friends know not to ask you out on Mondays or Thursdays… or Tuesdays… or Wednesdays…

4. You know where to find suspenders and fake Keds in the Carmel market

5. You’re on a first name basis with the cobbler on King George street

6. You shop for clothes at the Dizengoff square vintage market, but always do a "can I swivel in this?" test before purchasing

When a 5-Year-Old Chooses Your Dance Shoes

I believe that we can learn a lot from our 5-year-old selves. Children keep things simple – they have big dreams without worrying about them being too difficult to achieve, they live in the moment and don’t get hung up on the past or the future and they’re honest about how they feel about people. In short, little homies keep it real, yo.

When I was 5 I wanted to grow up to be a ballerina. I was in a ballet class where I got to dance around to music, have fun with friends, wear pretty pink shoes and even put on a show at the end of the year. I was a shy and quiet child, but dancing brought something else out of me. I even enjoyed being on stage. My mother keeps a framed photo of me dressed in my green dance costume, right before a performance. I look like a total dork, but that picture brings back memories of how excited I was that day.
